Soy wax is more difficult to work with, in my opinion. It can be bumpy, frosted, and show wet spots. We have to work at a certain temperature and take many steps to produce the look we desire in our candles. So why do to this trouble? Why buy soy candles when paraffin candles are cheaper and easier to make? Here are the factors that drove our choice.
Environmental
Soy wax is made from a renewable resource, unlike paraffin which is made from petroleum. Beeswax candles are made from a limited supply and are therefore quite expensive. Paraffin wax also emits at least 11 kinds of toxins into the air in your home, 2 of which are known carcinogenics. Soy candles release much less (non toxic) smoke into the air, making it safer for those with smoke sensitivity.
Financial
While paraffin candles are usually cheaper than soy, soy wax burns slower so a soy candle should last 35-50% longer than a paraffin candle of the same size. Soy also holds on to fragrance better and releases a stronger scent into the air. Soy is much easier to clean, saving your furniture should you accidentally spill wax.
Economical
Mashley's Wax is made from USA grown soybeans. Over 80% of soybeans are grown in the Upper Midwest (Iowa, Illinois, and Minnesota).
